A Little History

The school district still utilizes a classic horseshoe shaped building erected in 1930 as part of its High School complex.  The Central Consolidated High School of District No. 1 was dedicated on August 5, 1930.

Since 1966 approximately 50 classrooms, a gymnasium, P.E. building, a bus building, vocational agri building, a first-class track, baseball/softball complex, a large school cafeteria, and 3300 feet of office space has been added to the school.  The bulk of this has taken place since 1984.

The school was integrated in 1967 with high school students from Garland being bused to Genoa Central.  This lasted through 1969 when the high school at Garland was reopened.

The seventies were very sobering years and the school district had to show a lot of character to endure.  In the spring of 1972 the Genoa Central Gym burned.  The structure had lasted about forty years since its construction as a WPA project in the 1930's.

Just after the construction of a new elementary school and cafeteria in 1972, the financial picture for the school district darkened considerably.  In 1973 the year had to be shortened because there was not enough funds to continue having school.  The next year saw teachers teaching a month without pay so the school year could be finished.  The school had to use a neighboring school's gym to play its basketball games.

By raising the millage, borrowing, and with the help of very dedicated and loyal citizens, the beginning of the 1974-75 school year began to look up.  From that point there has been continuous growth.   In 1987 the school district patrons and other volunteers constructed an $80,000 track facility at no cost to the tax payers.

Most recently the school has completed construction of a Vocational Agriculture building, seven new classrooms, a P.E. building, and the baseball/softball complex.

Today the school has a huge budget, employing 71 certified and 43 noncertified employees.  It is by far the biggest business in this part of Miller County.
